Kodi Adu goats are reared primarily for meat. Serve as the sole or subsidiary source of livelihood for a large number of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers in the breeding tract.
Comments on breeding tract
The major part of the breeding tract lies in southern agro-climatic zone of Tamil Nadu and the climate is generally hot, semi-arid and tropical in nature. The mean annual maximum and minimum temperatures are 32.9 and 24.5oC respectively. The mean annual relative humidity recorded at 08.30 h and 17.30 h is 78.0 and 73.6 per cent respectively. The average annual rainfall is 668.0 mm, received in 35.4 rainy days.

They are allowed to browse extensively as a herded group for a distance of 5 to 10 km. Goats are housed only during nights. Few male kids are selected based on body weight for breeding purpose and others are disposed off and almost all the females are retained. The goat owners mainly belong to Yadhava, Devar and Maravar communities.
