Synonyms Desi
Origin Local. Named after area of its origin i.e. Halar in Jamnagar district of Gujarat. Halar was first established with this name by Jam Shri Rawalji Lakhaji, a Jadeja Rajput, in 1540
Major utility Pack animal, donkey cart
Comments on utility Bharwad and Rabari Pastorals mainly use this donkey as pack animal to carry luggage during migration with small ruminants. Kumbhar (Potter) community also uses this animal for pottery work in Dwarka, Jamnagar region. Also used as pack/ donkey cart to carry mud and bricks in brick making work

Comments on Management Majority of Halari donkey owners are pastoralists and they follow extensive pattern for donkey rearing and management. These pastoralists regularly migrate to other districts. Pastoral women, generally, take care of Halari donkeys. Breeders usually keep few females and one or two breeding males and breed them selectively

Buyers come from different regions of Gujarat and other states
