Origin Derived from the town of Mehsana in North Gujarat.

Comments on utility The breed is considered to be a cross between Surti and Murrah.
Comments on breeding tract Typical animals are seen in the towns of Mehsana, Patan, Sidhpur, Vijapur, Kadi, Kalol and Radhanpura.

Comments on Management Farmers maintain animals as commerical production unit. Breeding is through A.I. Grazing is practised in rainy season along road side or river beds. Lucern is grown as a main green fodder crop. Concentrate is fed to milking buffaloes and it contains sorghum/ maize, wheat bran, rice bran, GNC, sunflower,clusterbean, kurma and molases. Usually pelleted concentrate feed supplied by NDDB is fed to animals. Animals are tied mostly at a place over day and night. Houses in the form of temporary sheds of thatched roofs and wooden partitions are provided. Female calves are cared more.
Morphology
Colour Mostly black, a few animals are black brown or brown.
Horn shape and size Horns are generally sickle shaped with the curve more upward then in the Surti breed and less curved then in the Murrah breed. They are generally bent downward and then take a curve like the horns of a ram.
Visible characteristics Eyes are very prominent, black and bright bulging from their sockets with folds of skin on upper lids.
