Local. People of Assam have been traditionally rearing swamp buffaloes in the embankment and small islands of the mighty river Brahmaputra (luit), hence these buffaloes are named Luit.

The Luit (Swamp) buffaloes are mostly distributed in the upper Brahmaputra valley of Assam covering nine districts of upper Assam. These buffaloes are also found in some areas of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland bordering Assam
Large proportion of these buffaloes are reared on river islands, river banks and forest land in large groups, locally called khuti which means nomadic

Visible characteristics
These swamp buffaloes are medium sized strongly built animals with prominent wither and short tail. The animals are characterized by broad and concave fore head with prominent eyes and wide muzzle, and distinct semi-circular horns in both sexes. They possess light white stocking up to the knee in both fore and hind legs

Any Peculiarity of the breed
The diploid no. of chromosome (2N) in Luit (Swamp) buffaloes is 48, out of which 23 pairs are autosomes and one pair is sex chromosome. The 4th pair of metacentric chromosome of swamp buffalo resulted from the tandem fusion of chromosome no.4 and 9 of riverine buffalo.
